MINORITY at the Salt Space Gallery for Skinny's closing reception.

Karston "Skinny" Tannis

I had a blast!  It's always fun spending a night with friends in events such as these.  We had to come out to show our support at the Salt Space Gallery on 27th st between Broadway and 6th Ave for Black History Month.  This exhibit was up for a couple weeks, displaying some of NYC's most aspiring young artist, poets and musicians doing their thing for a just cause.  In association with the African American Art Collective and Salt Space, Karston "Skinny" Tannis came up with "Visions of a Community" sponsored by Heineken, Terra Fossil Wines and Liberator Magazine.  A collection of paintings, drawings, pictures and even a "live exhibit", which featured what appeared to be a daughter's collection of he mother's belonging on top of a night stand.

For example, a ash tray with cigarette butts in it, a tea cup that had a little tea left over, jewelry, nick knacks and pumps throw on the floor beside the night stand.  I am assuming the artist was depicting a woman (possibly her mother), that had been taken away from her abruptly either by, natural causes or by human hands.  Looks like the artist preserved her "mother's" nightstand the same way as the day she went away from.  This artist's exhibit was hands down my favorite at the gallery, besides Skinny's photography of course, meow.

The gallery had a up beat vibe to it, which is always nice when going to any events, very "BMX" friendly, wink.  DJ Desim killed it with a compilation of great music.  Around 9ish, Skinny took the stage to acknowledge the featured artist at the gallery as well as the everyone else that made this possible for him.   The spoken word section of the night was off the hook.  They took the stage for an hour and read some of their most unique and personal poems that touch the hearts of the audience.  Snap those fingers!  The applause's didn't do it justice, you needed a AK-47 with a full banana clip to ring out shots in the air rude boys and girls.  The live band,  free wine and beer were the icing on the cake, what more could you ask for?...Here are some pictures from last night's event.  Shout outs to Skinny for doing his thing!

Great photos! The photograph on the right was used to promote last night's event...
